CHAPTER 29
The Post Pub was a cozy oblong bar three doors to the left of The Washington Post Buildingâs K Street entrance. Just before the end of the dayside shift at the newspaper, it was nearly empty. Slade sat in the right rear booth facing the door, a bowl of breaded onion rings on the table and a Dos Equis bottle in hand. He scanned the row of framed Washington Post front pages along the opposite wall: Kennedy Orders Blockade of Cuba, President Kennedy Shot â Feared Dead, âThe Eagle Has Landedâ â Two Men Walk on the Moon, Nixon Denies Role in Cover-Up. He was on Nixon Resigns when Phil Totter walked in.
Totter appeared dapper as ever in a gold cashmere V-neck sweater and khaki pants that contoured to his slim build. Long, graying brown hair topped his pale handsome face. Slade gave him a wave. Totter sat down across the table from him.
âYou look the same, Phil,â said Slade.
âItâs getting harder to maintain that mirage. Damn grey hair is betraying me.â
âBuy you a beer?â
âMake it Coke. Weâre on deadline.â
âYou and Walter Desmond.â
âI still work under him,â Totter said. âIn more ways than one.â
âHeâs the Washington Post Gossip King.â
âReally âqueen,â but Iâll seize the crown someday. I just need the right exclusive.â
Totter looked intently at Slade. A cute short waitress appeared beside them. Slade indicated his companion.
âCoke.â
The waitress withdrew. Totter appraised Slade.
âSo, youâre out of the Army for good, eh?â
âYep,â said Slade.
âBut still shooting bad guys.â
âStrictly return fire.â
âYes, so I read. Well, Mark, youâre not only an old friend â youâre a new celebrity. Which just happens to be my beat.â
âAnd Nina Holtâs right now.â
âRight,â said Totter. âI saw her report on the Capitol Hill Sniper, and your Rock Creek Park adventure. Sheâs still quite beautiful. That has to sting.â
Slade shrugged.
âYou know, I was jealous of Nina at Georgetown,â Totter said. âHaving you for a boyfriend.â
âYou wouldâve been less aggravating.â
Totter smiled wistfully.
âNow she wants your sniper story too,â he said.
âShe wonât get it.â
âWill I?â
âWhen itâs over, Phil,â said Slade. âIn exchange for another.â
âJoan Russell.â
âYou can save me hours of online research.â
The waitress returned, set a glass of Coke in front of Totter, and left. He took a sip.
âAll you straight boys lusted after Zara,â he said. âAnd you ruined Joan Russellâs career. The role typecast her so she couldnât get much acting work later.â
âShe was great in Executive Sweat.â
âShe spent half the movie naked.â
âThe other half was pretty good too,â said Slade.
âIn any case, she landed on her feet. Joan Russell Gardner may be the most influential woman in Washington whoâs not holding office. Her husband has the money, but she basically controls it â and him. If you watch their joint appearances, you can see Adam defer to her in everything, like in a hostage video.â
âIs she cucking him?â
âOff the record â yes,â said Totter. âCurrently with her tennis instructor.â
âHow cliché. But why âoff the recordâ? Sounds like juicy stuff â âZaraâs Newest Racket.ââ
âThatâs cute, âcept our managing editor doesnât want the Gardners tainted.
